Plant Name: White Eggplant/ Guthi Vankaya

Sowing Season: It can be grown in plains throughout the year. But Brinjal is a warm-season crop and requires a long warm growing season.

Amount of soil needs: Eggplant prefers well-drained, fertile, sandy loam soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.2. Remove all weeds and till the soil to loosen it to a depth of 6 to 10 inches.

• Ideal planting mixture for Brinjal: 2 part garden soil & 1 part organic manure OR 1 part garden soil, 1 part coco-peat & 1 part Vermicompost.

How to Sow: 

• Take a seedling tray with medium-sized cells & drainage holes at the bottom.
• Fill the cells with a moist coco-peat medium.
• Sow 2 - 3 brinjal seeds per cell. Brinjal seeds are very small, avoid sowing them in very deep.
• Place seeds on the surface of the medium and push them inside using a pencil tip so that the seeds are immersed deep enough to be covered by the coco - peat medium.
• Keep the seedling tray indoors till the seeds germinate.
• In the first week, water the seeds using a spoon. Two tablespoons of water every day is enough.
• If seedbeds are made outdoors, protect them from rainfall and harsh direct sunlight. Cover the bed by making a temporary roof of the plastic sheet. Sprinkle water in the form of a light shower using a watering sprinkler.

Germination time (average): Your Brinjal seeds will germinate within the first 6 to 8 days.

Water & Sunlight needs: Eggplants need consistent watering of at least 1 inch every week, especially seedlings. Rather than giving your eggplants several short waterings per week, it's better to provide one thorough soaking that reaches 6 inches into the soil. This encourages the eggplant roots to grow deep into the soil

Keep the container at any location that gets at least 6 to 7 hours of sunlight. Sunlight is very essential for the eggplants as it promotes the growth of the plant

How long for yield: Brinjals can be harvested 70 to 80 days from the sowing of seeds.

• With proper care and attention, the Brinjal plant will continue producing vegetables for three years.

Common problems/diseases: Brinjal needs warm weather to grow. A cold spell will affect germination. Keep plants in a sheltered sunny spot during the day.

If your brinjal plant is producing flowers but the flowers keep falling off without producing vegetables, there could be two reasons for this. The first reason is under watering and the second reason is lack of pollination.

The yellowing of leaves of the brinjal plant is caused due to irregular watering or lack of nitrogen in your growing medium.
